Karditsa (Greek: ΚΑΡΔΙΤΣΑ) is a city in
western Thessaly in mainland Greece. Karditsa city is the capital of Karditsa
Prefecture. The name is linked to the location of Karditsa in relation to the
rest of Greece the 'heart of Greece' (καρδια-kardia - heart). Thessaly is the
first province of Greece which is refered as Hellas. The ancient populations
of the territory lived there since 9.000 B.C. consisnting of Pelasgika -
Paleoellinika phylla. Within the province of Karditsa is the region of the
Agrafa high in the mountains. Karditsa ls linked with GR-30, the road to
Karpenisi, and the road to Palamas and Larissa. Karditsa is south-west of
Palamas and Larissa, west of Farsala and the Volos area, north-west of Athens,
Lamia, Domokos and Sofades, north of Karpenisi, north-east of Arta, and
east-south-east of Trikala, Grevena, Ioannina, and Kalampaka.
Karditsa has schools, lyceums, gymnasium, church, bank, post office, railway
station on the Trikala–Karditsa–Domokos line, sports ground, water tower, and
squares (plateies).
